Celebrating the Year of the Rabbit
18/01/2023
Chinese New Year also known as Lunar New Year is the one of the most significant festivals in China. It is a celebration of the beginning of the Chinese New Year. Celebrations traditionally last for 16 days starting from Chinese New Year and culminating in the Lantern Festival. It is a time for family reunions, feasting and gifting.
This year is the Year of the Rabbit, starting on 22 January 2023 and ending on 9 February 2024, which is the fourth animal sign in the Chinese zodiac cycle. Those born in the year of the Rabbit are recognised as being loyal, gentle, quick minded, patient and responsible. This year is the year of the Water Rabbit and is predicted to be a year of hope.
To mark the Chinese New Year, activities include putting up decorations, holding family feasts, reuniting with relatives, offering gifts, firework displays, and watching lion and dragon dances.
Gift giving is an important tradition during the Chinese New Year. Gifts are exchanged between family, friends and colleagues as it is believed this will bring luck to both the giver and receiver. Giving gifts symbolises love, harmony and goodwill.
